Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain is common among people who are obese or who may be dealing with other chronic health diseases such as osteoarthritis, gout, and septic arthritis. Oftentimes, knee pain occurs as a result of acute or chronic trauma at the joint, which is often seen within the context of sports.

Some specific injuries we see that can lead to knee pain include:

  • Ligament sprains, both inside and outside of the knee joint
  • Tendonitis and bursitis, which is inflammation of bursae or tendons (especially the quadriceps tendon and patellar tendon) surrounding the knee joint
  • Chondromalacia, aka runner's knee, which is wearing down of the cartilage underneath the kneecap
  • Meniscus injuries, which involves partial or complete tears of a protective and supportive cartilage inside the knee

In some cases, knee pain can even be referred from the hip or low back, especially if the hip is severely arthritic or if a spinal nerve root that branches into the leg is being impinged in the lumbar spine.

In addition to a painful joint, people with a knee injury may also complain of swelling, tenderness, the sound or sensation of clicking, popping, or grinding, the inability to bear weight on the affected leg or directly on the knee, difficulty climbing stairs or getting out of a chair, decreased range of motion at the knee, or the sensation that the knee is about to buckle or give out.
